Checking Vignettes and Fines

The control of vignettes in Slovakia is carried out by the Slovak Police and the National Motorway Company (NDS). These authorities have the ability to identify vehicles and check whether you have a valid electronic vignette or whether your vehicle is exempt from the obligation. Electronic checks are carried out through toll gantries which scan vehicle registration numbers and automatically verify the validity of the vignettes. If they find that a vignette is not valid, you face a fine of up to 150 , which can be reduced to 100  if you pay it within 15 days.

How are vignette checks carried out?

Directly on toll motorway sections and in various ways using camera systems that reliably recognise the registration plate of the vehicle.

What is the amount of the fine?

If you are caught using a motorway section without a valid electronic vignette and you are not exempt from the fine, the fine is up to €150, which will be reduced to €100 if you pay it within 15 days. The checks also include detecting abuse of the exemption from paying the vignette.

How are photographs and data handled?

Photographs of vehicles that are not equipped with a valid electronic vignette or are not exempted from payment are taken and the data from them are stored for a certain period of time. These data and photographs may be requested for possible administrative proceedings. After the specified retention period, these photographs are automatically deleted.

Am I Obliged to Obtain a Vignette?

If your vehicle is a motor vehicle with at least four wheels and has a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, you are obliged to obtain an electronic vignette before entering a toll motorway section.

However, there are vehicles that are exempt from this obligation. These include motorcycles and trailers. For these categories of vehicles it is not necessary to obtain an electronic vignette.

News

Increase in the Speed Limit

A possible increase in the maximum speed limit on motorways is under discussion. According to current information, a proposal is being prepared to increase the maximum speed limit to 150 km/h compared to the current 130 km/h. This planned change should give drivers greater flexibility and efficiency when travelling on Slovak motorways.

Digital Driving Licence

Innovative changes are emerging in the field of driving licences. Thanks to the eDocuments app, it is now possible to dispense with the physical carrier of the driving licence. This app allows you to store your driving licence directly on your mobile device. All you need is to have the eDocuments app installed and the driving licence uploaded in the system. This step brings greater convenience and practicality for Slovak drivers who do not need to carry a physical driving licence with them at all times, but can have it available on their smartphone at any time.

Toll Gates

Toll gates are used in some EU countries to pay for motorway use. In France, for example, toll gates are a common way of paying for motorway use. Drivers pass through gates where they pay either in cash or through electronic payment systems. A similar system exists in Italy, where toll gates are located at the entrance and exit of motorways.

Motorway Vignettes

In Austria and Switzerland, vignettes are a common way of paying for motorway use. Drivers must have a valid vignette, which they buy either at border crossing points or at sales points. The vignette is placed on the windscreen of the vehicle and is valid for a certain period, for example 10 days or 1 day, depending on the type of vignette purchased.

Electronic Toll Gates

Some EU countries, such as Germany, have electronic toll systems in place. Drivers have a special electronic device on their vehicles that automatically identifies the vehicle when it passes through a toll gate. Charges are then automatically deducted from the subscription or account associated with the electronic device. This system allows for smooth driving without stopping at toll gates.
